Emma, a Victorian Romance

Summary: Emma is a maid for an old lady who lives in London. Her life is pleasant monotony, and she does all the household chores perfectly. However, her life changes when the old lady’s former pupil, William Jones, visits the house. They fall in love at first sight, but William is one of the rich Jones family, who are of high status and rank in the Victorian hierarchy. The British social circle and it’s power hungry members would definitely disagree to the marriage of William Jones and a lowly maid Emma.

A sweet love story of a socially unacceptable couple that has been retold again and again through books and novels. This is set in Victorian Britain, manga style!

My recommendation: I don’t think many people will enjoy this manga if you are into the usual stuff. The story is slow, even for shoujo manga and there is a lot of talking. There is also not that much romance even though it is a romance manga. However, this manga might be good for people who have never met manga before, enjoy reading books, and don’t like fight scenes. Oh, but I have to warn you, there is an explicit lack of humour in this manga, for all those people who love laughs even if they occur seldom.

My comments: For me personally, it helped improve my Japanese language (because of all the long words) and learn about Victorian Britain (I sound like it’s a homework assignment...). I also quite like the style, the manga-ka uses quite a lot of still scenes, which is annoying if you like fast-moving action scenes, but is really effective if you don’t mind them.
